The company was founded and named Blanchard & Cram in Evanston, Illinois where
maps and atlases were manufactured and sold on March 18, 1867. George F. Cram
Company was formed with George as sole owner in March 1869 when the company
was a supply house for traveling book salesmen. They then moved to Chicago,
Illinois at this time. After the great fire, the George F. Cram Company was
rebuild and renamed Cram Map Depot in October 1871. In May 1921, George sold
his map company to Art and Edward Peterson who combined George’s company with
their existing National Map Company of Indianapolis. After George F. Cram died
on March 24, 1928, the Peterson’s changed the name of their company to The George
F. Cram Company in March 1928. Loren B. Douthit began working for the Peterson’s
as a School Sales Field Manager in April 1937. In March 1966, Loren B. Douthit
became President and majority shareholder. In the beginning of 1968, Loren developed
the educational division of Cram to include maps, globes, and learning programs.
In early 1988, The George F. Cram Company acquired American Geographic, Visual
Craft, and Starlight Manufacturing. The George F. Cram later acquired Southwinds
Publications in 1991 and Rath Globe in 1992.
