Skeet Shoot Game Cartridges Recalled by Toymax
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Toymax Inc., of Plainview, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling approximately 435,000
Arcadia Electronic Skeet Shoot games to replace the game cartridges. The skeet shoot
games' cartridges can be defective, and can cause the projector to overheat, melt and
smoke, presenting a risk of burns to consumers.
Hasbro Pays $400,000 Civil Penalty
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today
that Hasbro Inc., of Pawtucket, R.I., paid a $400,000 civil penalty to settle allegations
that it violated the Consumer Product Safety Act by failing to timely report defects with
its "PLAYSKOOL baby FOLD'N TRAVEL" infant carriers. Playskool Baby is a division
of Hasbro.

CPSC, eBay Inc. and Amazon.com Auctions Prevent Hazardous Products
From Being Sold on Web Sites
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing an
initiative with two of the largest auction web sites - eBay Inc., of San Jose, Calif., and
Amazon.com Auctions of Seattle, Wash. The new initiative will make it easier for consumers
to protect themselves from dangerous products being sold online. eBay and Amazon.com
Auctions will link to CPSC's web site and prominently post guidance for consumers to help
them get information about recalled products.
Renewed Search for Lane Cedar Chests
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), The Lane Co., of Altavista, Va., is calling for a renewed search for cedar chests
to replace their locks. In 1996, Lane recalled 12 million chests with lids that
automatically latch shut when closed, following reports of six children suffocating inside
the chests. CPSC and Lane have since become aware of another suffocation death and two
near fatalities to children who became entrapped in the chests when the lid closed and
automatically latched shut.
Baby Wipe Warmers Recalled by Advance Thermo Control
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Advance Thermo Control (ATC), of Hong Kong, is voluntarily recalling 152,000 baby
wipe warmers distributed by Prince Lionheart Inc., of Santa Maria, Calif. A wipe warmer is
an electric appliance that warms baby wipes. Cracks in the interior tub of these wipe
warmers can allow water to contact the electrical components. This can result in consumers
receiving an electric shock.
Precious Keepsakes Rattle Recalled by Russ Berrie & Co.
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Russ Berrie & Co. Inc., of Oakland, N.J., is voluntarily recalling about
13,400 rattles. The shape and size of the rattle's handle allow it to become lodged in the
throats of babies, posing a choking hazard. The rattles violate the Federal Hazardous
Substances Act for the design and construction of baby rattles.
Bead Coaster Recalled by Maxim Enterprise and Zany Brainy
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Maxim Enterprise Inc., of Middleboro, Mass., and Zany Brainy Inc., of King of
Prussia, Pa., are recalling about 4,900 wooden pull toys. The pull toy's wheels can break
off and the bead can detach from the pull string, posing small parts choking hazards to
young children.
Jogging Strollers Recalled by InSTEP LLC
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), InSTEP LLC, of Mendota Heights, Minn., is recalling about 44,000 jogging
strollers. The stroller's brake can fail, causing the stroller to unexpectedly roll away
resulting in injury to a child.

CPSC Warns Against Baby Mattresses, Pads That Make Unfounded Claims
About Reducing SIDS
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning
consumers that certain baby mattresses and mattress pads encourage the potentially deadly
practice of placing babies to sleep on their stomachs, and claim that the products reduce
the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Despite the claims, CPSC is not aware of
any evidence that proves that babies can safely be placed to sleep on their stomachs on
these products, or that using the products will reduce the risk of SIDS. Parents and
caregivers should never put babies to sleep on their stomachs, whether on these products
or any others.
Retailers Join CPSC in Promoting Safe Bedding Practices for Babies -
Each Year 900 SIDS Deaths May be Caused by Soft Bedding
To prevent deaths from soft bedding, seven major retailers are
joining the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in kicking off a safety
campaign promoting safe bedding practices for babies. As many as 900 baby deaths each year
attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) may actually be caused by suffocation in
soft bedding, such as quilts, comforters, pillows and sheepskins.
National Poison Prevention Week: Poisonings Kill About 30 Children
Annually, Cause 1 Million Calls to Poison Centers
Each year, unintentional poisonings from medicines and household
chemicals kill about 30 children and prompt more than 1 million calls to the nation's
poison control centers. National Poison Prevention Week, which is March 19-25, aims to
help prevent those childhood poisonings by reminding people to check their homes now.
Handy Home Lighters Recalled by Michael's Stores
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Michael's Stores Inc., of Irving, Texas, is recalling about 213,000 all-purpose
lighters. These lighters can leak butane when they are ignited, causing an excessive burst
of flame from the tip or other areas of the lighter. This presents a risk of fire and burn
injuries to consumers.
Two People Sentenced for Selling Illegal Fireworks in Wisconsin
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) played a critical
role in the investigation that resulted in two people being sentenced on federal charges
involving illegal fireworks in Wisconsin. Two others have already been sentenced.
Coffeemakers Recalled by Tim Hortons
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Tim Hortons, a chain of coffeeshops operated by the TDL Group Ltd., of Ontario,
Canada, is recalling about 31,000 coffeemakers sold in the U.S. and Canada. The
coffeepot's handle can break, causing the pot to fall. Consumers can suffer burn injuries
from hot coffee or lacerations from broken glass.
18-Volt Battery Packs Recalled by DeWalt®
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), DEWALT® Industrial Tool Co., of Baltimore, Md., is recalling for repair about
755,000 DEWALT® 18-volt battery packs (model DW9095) for use with various
battery-operated tools. The battery packs' clips can come loose, causing the battery packs
to fall. When working with these tools, falling battery packs weighing about 2.2 pounds
can cause injury.

CPSC, Firms Recall Mountain Bikes, Power Strips
Dynacraft Industries Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., is
voluntarily recalling about 19,000 mountain bikes. The front suspension forks on these
bikes might not have been welded properly, and can break apart during use, resulting in
serious injury to the rider. Frieder Inc., of Bedford Heights, Ohio, is recalling about
35,000 Champion Brand Tools 6-outlet power strips. The wiring in these power strips is
undersized and poses shock, electrocution and fire hazards.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and
the National SAFE KIDS Campaign today announced a crib and play yard safety initiative to
keep children safe when traveling with their families. Recent spot checks by SAFE KIDS
found unsafe cribs and play yards in 80 percent of hotels and motels visited.
Cadet Recalls In-Wall Heaters
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and
Cadet Manufacturing Co., of Vancouver, Wash., announced today the recall of more than 1.9
million Cadet and Encore brand in-wall electric heaters, distributed mainly in California,
Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. This recall announcement follows the resolution of
the lawsuit filed by CPSC staff against the company on January 14, 1999.
Ceiling Light Fixtures Recalled by TSI Prime
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), TSI Prime Inc., of Coppell, Texas, is voluntarily recalling about
126,000 ceiling-mounted light fixtures. The light fixtures can short circuit, posing a
fire hazard.
Tommy Hilfiger Socks Recalled
- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), Mountain High Hosiery Ltd., of San Diego, Calif., is recalling
approximately 360,000 pairs of Tommy Hilfiger socks for infants and children. The
heat-sealed Tommy Hilfiger flag logo appliques on these socks can detach, posing a choking
hazard to young children.
Infant and Toddler Jackets Recalled by Nordstrom Inc.
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), Nordstrom Inc., of Seattle, Wash., is recalling approximately 2,250
infant and toddler jackets. Snaps located on the flap pockets of these jackets could be
removed, presenting a choking hazard to infants and young children.
Storm Doors Recalled by New Cole Sewell Corp.
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), New Cole Sewell Corp., of St. Paul, Minn., is recalling about 23,000
storm doors manufactured without retaining pins in the upper windows. The upper window can
fall out and could injure nearby consumers.
Lancaster Colony Corp. Fined $150,000 for Failing to
Report Defective Candles to CPSC
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
announced today that Lancaster Colony Corp., of Columbus, Ohio, will pay a civil penalty
of $150,000 to settle allegations that the company's original formulation Clearfire
candles, sold by its Candle-lite division, contained a defect and the firm failed to
report the problem to the agency as required by law.
Fire Cap Fire and Smoke Suppressants Recalled by
Distributors
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and
various distributors, are announcing the recall of more than 136,000 cans of "FIRE
CAP" brand fire and smoke suppressant. The product does not suppress fires and could
intensify fires. The product was manufactured by The Colbra Group, which is out of
business.
Pull Toys and Race Car Collectibles Recalls
This press release consists of two recalls. Manhattan
Group LLC, of Minneapolis, Minn., is recalling about 3,400 pull toys. The wooden wheels
and pegs attached to the toy could come off, presenting a choking hazard to young
children. Action Performance Companies Inc., of Phoenix, Ariz., is recalling about 1,600
race car collectibles, which are illuminated race car panels. The fluorescent light base
of the unit becomes extremely hot and can melt, presenting a fire hazard.
Novelty Lighters Recalled by Prometheus International
Inc.
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), Prometheus International Inc., of Bell, Calif., is recalling about
4,000 novelty lighters. The lighters do not have any child-resistant mechanisms, as
required by the Consumer Product Safety Act. Young children could ignite the lighters,
presenting a fire hazard.
Toy Chests, Ladies' Robes, Men's Sweatshirts, and
Vanguard Engines and Fuel Filters Recall (Total of 4 Recalls)
Thornwood Furniture Manufacturing, of Phoenix, Ariz.,
is recalling about 400 toy chests for replacement because the lids on these toy chests
could fall onto a child's head or neck. HANRO USA Inc. of New York, N.Y., is recalling
about 2,100 ladies' robes. The robes fail to meet federal flammability standards for
clothing and can ignite readily, presenting a serious risk of burn injuries. Eddie Bauer,
of Redmond, Wash., is recalling about 2,000 men's sweatshirts. The sweatshirts, which fail
to meet federal mandatory standards for fabric flammability, could ignite readily and
present a serious risk of burn injuries in violation of the Federal Flammable Fabrics Act.
Briggs & Stratton Corp., of Milwaukee, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 2,600
Vanguard V-twin gasoline engines with 9-quart fuel tanks. The fuel filters on these
engines can leak gasoline, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Shopko Stores Recalls Baby Garments
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC), Shopko Stores Inc. of Green Bay, Wis., is recalling approximately 9,800
Peek-A-Babe baby garments. The rose-shaped buttons on these garments can detach, posing a
choking hazard to young children.
