Applied Physics LLC develops toys and educational products that are primarily science-oriented. The NewtonCar, the gravity - powered car (US patent 6.773,264) is intended for use at home, in the classroom or for racing competition events. It uses no motors, batteries or fuels, employing only energy weights to power the car from a standing start. It can even climb grades. Change the weights, rear end ratio and wheel types to discover the highest acceleration, highest speed, furthest distance, greatest payload, steepest grade climb!

The NewtonCar
Two students preparing the NewtonCar for a test run.
The NewtonCar, rigged with energy weights, ready for launch. A jack stand facilitates winding the braided polyester driveline onto the drivewheel spool. The locking pin engages the drivewheel and prevents the car from accelerating till desired. The rear end ratio can be changed from 3:1 to 2:1 to achieve different rates of acceleration and grade climbing ability. A removable rubber slick on the drivewheel allows running with high or low wheel-to-ground friction. The Upright assembly is over 30 inches high and can be rotated fore or aft to achieve different effects. The weight stack includes 20 stainless steel washers (approximately 1 pound) to provide different amounts of torque and energy combinations. The wheels are low coefficient UHMW Polyethylene and run on polished stainless steel axles.

The manual contains a description of how to setup and run the car, and the complete theory of operation including weight, mass, force, torque, friction, drive ratio, impulse and momentum, potential and kinetic energy, velocity, acceleration and more. In addition, 19 complete experiments are included covering the many science aspects that can be explored with this exciting new model car. The principles of operation are the same as those encountered in real vehicles - aspiring young engineers can learn the basics right here. Everything is out in the open, plain and easy to see, and easy to understand - the NewtonCar exposes nature´s processes, providing its own delights and thrilling performance. The car lends itself to modification for competition racing for school and scout activities.

The NewtonCar, setup to run outdoors.
Best performance is achieved indoors on hard, flat surfaces such as hardwood or other smooth indoor floors, schools aisles and gym floors. Plywood tracks also provide excellent running surfaces. Typical distances achieved are in the order of 30 feet (10 meters) with the stock car.

The NewtonCar uses gravity (its falling energy weights) to climb a grade against the same force of gravity. The weights go down and the car goes up! Kids investigate how steep a grade it can climb and what factors determine that. Other mysteries relating to wheel effects - rotating, rolling, slipping, sliding - all can be investigated with the NewtonCar.
