These brightly-colored silicone bands work like ordinary rubber bands when stretched, but revert to giraffes, rhinos, kangaroos, elephants, ostriches and hippos when relaxed. The work of Japanese designers Yumiko Ohashi and Masanori Haneda, whose mission is to endow longevity on disposable items, the bands are one of the hottest items for little girls at The Purple Bear in Guilford, Conn. Kids collect them and share them with friends. "It´s like the Beanie Babies," declared Jeanne Orlando, store manager. "They´re very, very popular. They´re a big hit with little kids," said Chris Kline, sales associate of the Museum of Modern Art´s Design Store in New York City. They also sell very well at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art´s store. Most toy stores aren´t carrying them yet, but they´re not only popular with Tween girls at Learning Express stores, but are "picking up," said senior buyer Sandie Pardiso. Twenty-four animals come in each box. They´re also available as a Pets line and on a card with six animals. Editor's Note: Animal Rubber Bands became a hot fad across the country in 2009. TDmonthly first reported on their potential as a top-seller in 2005. Launch date: 2002.

Shoot an edible miniature marshmallow over 30´ with this pump-action shooter, complete with LED sight for aiming accuracy. The easy-to-refill magazine holds 20 marshmallows (or foam pellets—which are included) for fast, nonstop action. The LED sight shoots a safe beam of red light to help locate a target. Barrel and magazine are top-rack dishwasher safe, and the back of the box even has a target for practice.
— "The Shooter did excellent for us this past year [2005]," said Andrew Saucier, general manager for the Marshmallow Fun Company. "We were on Jay Leno and Good Morning America. We're about to go on David Letterman, and AOL picked us as a top toy of the year." In November the company launched the Marshmallow Blaster, which fires "big marshmallows," he added.
— Warren Brown, owner of French’s Toy Shop Inc. in Concord, N.H., claimed he never fired marshmallows at lax storeworkers, but later admitted, “I did use it on a couple of customers!”
— "Marshmallow Shooters are really hot," Mary Alice Miner, co-owner of Miner’s Doll & Toy Store in Ocean Springs, Miss., told TDmonthly in fall 2007.

Pranksters slip the ring over their fingers and wear the buzzer in their palms. A friendly handshake gives their victims a little shock!
— Unlike the original joy buzzer that had sharp edges, current buzzers are round-edged and harmless, says Mark Newgarden, designer of the Garbage Pail Kids.
— The product’s popularity in the ‘50s sparked competition from foreign knock-offs. Joke mogul Soren S.Adams’ grandson later redesigned their buzzer to be better and cheaper to produce, says Newgarden.
— Josh Banke, shipping manager at Finnegan’s Toy Store in Portland, Ore., says that joy buzzers are one of the items he has to order most often.

Called a “classic” by several retailers surveyed, this technologically updated version saves the prankster’s breath because it reinflates after every use. Kids can place these under seat cushions and wait for an embarrassing noise when someone plops down. Ja-Ru holds the patent to this unique self-inflating item.
— First introduced by the Jem Rubber Co. of Toronto in 1930, the classic Whoopee cushion has been a favorite ever since, says Mark Newgarden, author of “Cheap Laughs: The Art of the Novelty Item” (Picturebox Inc., 2004).
— Phil French, co-owner of Whirligigs and Whimsies in Bethesda, Md., says he used to order the self-inflator by the dozen, “but now I’m buying in 24s.”
— The two top-selling practical joke items at Rebecca’s, in Euless, Texas, are the 8” Whoopee cushion and the 6” Whoopee cushion, according to Joe Nazarro, owner of the wholesale supplier.
