Thanksgiving Kitchen Safety With Kids: What CPSC and USDA Say, Plus 3 Play-Food Sets

CPSC's 3-foot rule, USDA's 165-degree turkey rule and play food to keep little helpers busy

Thanksgiving is Nov. 26 this year, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says cooking fires spike on Thanksgiving Day. Here is what CPSC and the USDA advise for a holiday kitchen with kids, plus three play-food sets that give little helpers their own "kitchen" a safe distance from the stove.

Cooking fires: the CPSC numbers

CPSC says cooking accounts for 45% of residential fires each year. Thanksgiving Day averages 1,400 cooking fires, more than three times the daily average. Its holiday cooking tips (from its Nov. 19, 2025 release):

Frying a turkey? CPSC sums up its fryer advice as "COOK." Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions. Never Overheat the oil, and use one with a high smoke point. Never Overfill the fryer. Keep the fryer out of the garage, off the deck and away from the house.

Food safety: what USDA says

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) estimates that foodborne illness causes 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. Its Thanksgiving guide is built on four steps: clean, separate, cook and chill.

For turkey questions, the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline is 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854). FSIS says it is open on Thanksgiving Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern.

Three play-food sets for little helpers

CPSC's 3-foot rule is easier to keep when kids have their own Thanksgiving to cook. Prices are from Amazon on Nov. 3, 2026.

1. HABA Roast Chicken Soft Play Food

HABA Roast Chicken Soft Play Food

A soft play roast with a breast piece, two wings and two drumsticks that attach with hook-and-loop strips. HABA's own description says it works as a chicken or a turkey. It is about 7.5 inches long and rated ages 3 and up. Price on Amazon: $19.99, in stock.

Pros: A soft "turkey" for the play table; the pieces pull apart for serving; the lowest price of the three.
Cons: Only five pieces; rated 3+, so it isn't for younger toddlers.
