Small-world toys, like a little house with people, a farm with animals or a nativity stable, give young kids a world they can run with their hands. The CDC's milestone checklists show how that play grows. By 18 months, most children play "with toys in a simple way, like pushing a toy car." By 30 months, most use "things to pretend, like feeding a block to a doll as if it were food." By 4 years, most pretend "to be something else during play." Here are 7 picks for ages 1 to 5, from $12.74, with prices and stock checked on Amazon on Nov. 4, 2026.
Before you shop: The four Little People picks are made for ages 1 and up. The last three sets are rated 3 and up and carry a choking warning for small parts, so keep them away from babies and toddlers. And the CDC's free option still works. Its 30-month tip says: "Let your child play with large boxes." A shoebox house with paper people costs nothing.
Ages 1 and up: Little People
1. Fisher-Price Little People Nativity Set with Music & Lights
The Christmas pick. This 18-piece nativity set has a stable, a manger, 12 figures including baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the three wise men and an angel, and 5 play pieces. When a child sets the angel on top of the stable and presses down, the star lights up and "Away in a Manger" plays. Mattel lists it for ages 1 to 5, running on 3 AA batteries. Price on Amazon: $53.95, in stock. That is below the $62.99 Mattel's own shop listed on Nov. 4.
Pros: Chunky figures sized for toddlers; acting out a familiar story builds the pretend play the CDC describes; it comes out every year.
Cons: Our priciest pick; needs 3 AA batteries; it is a religious-holiday set, so it suits some families more than others.

2. Fisher-Price Little People Friends Together Play House
This folding play house has 4 rooms, a patio with a pool and a working tree swing, plus 3 figures and 7 play pieces. Six spots in the house trigger lights, songs and phrases, including the radio, the fridge, the oven and a toilet that "flushes." It is rated 1 to 5 years. The CDC says that by 2 years most children play "with more than one toy at the same time, like putting toy food on a toy plate." A house full of small pieces invites that. Price on Amazon: $46.99, in stock.
Pros: Folds shut for storage; lots of rooms for several kids to play side by side; works with other Little People figures.
Cons: Electronic sounds won't suit every household; the listing doesn't say what batteries it needs, so check the box.

3. Fisher-Price Little People Activity Vehicles Set
Five vehicles (a police car, an ice cream truck, a helicopter, a farm tractor and a bulldozer) and 5 figures in one set, for ages 1 and up. No batteries. This is the CDC's 18-month milestone in a box: "pushing a toy car." The vehicles also work with any Little People playset. Price on Amazon: $21.59, but the listing said only 16 were left on Nov. 4.
Pros: No batteries and no noise; five vehicles for about $22; adds to any Little People house or farm.
Cons: Stock was low on Nov. 4; it is a newer set with fewer reviews than the classics.

4. Fisher-Price Little People Classroom Figures
Ten Little People figures in a range of outfits, skin tones and hairstyles, for ages 1 to 5. Figures alone sound simple, but they are what kids move around most. The CDC's 5-year tip is to help children find things "to play dress up, school, or house." Price on Amazon: $22.22, in stock.
Pros: Ten figures for about $2 each; easy to add to a house, farm or school set you already own.
Cons: No playset included; a 10-pack may be more people than a single small set needs.

Ages 3 and up: small parts
5. Hape Family Pets Wooden Dollhouse Animal Set
A wooden dog, cat and bunny with beds and bowls, made to go with a dollhouse. This Hape pet set is rated 3 and up and carries a small-parts choking warning. Caring for pretend pets is classic role play. The CDC's 18-month tip suggests letting a child "pretend to feed her stuffed animal." Price on Amazon: $12.74, in stock, our cheapest pick.
Pros: Under $13; sturdy wood; works with almost any dollhouse.
Cons: Small pieces; an add-on rather than a full set.

6. Calico Critters Latte Cat Family
This Calico Critters family has a father, mother, sister and baby, with drinks, a waffle and a shopping bag the figures can hold. The adults stand about 3 inches tall, and the set is rated 3 and up with a small-parts choking warning. It is the pick for "play house" at the preschool end of the range. Price on Amazon: $29.99, in stock. In 2023, Epoch recalled Calico Critters sets sold with baby bottle and pacifier accessories. This set lists no bottle or pacifier, but check the box.
Pros: Tiny, detailed figures preschoolers love to collect; works with any Calico Critters house.
Cons: The price rose about $4.50 between Nov. 2 and Nov. 4; very small accessories; you will want a house to go with it.

7. Terra by Battat Country World Farm Animals (60-Piece Bucket)
A lidded bucket with 24 farm animals and 34 accessories, rated 3 and up with a small-parts choking warning. Animal figures are easy for pretend play. A child who "pretends to be something else" at 4 is often the farmer too. Price on Amazon: $25.68, in stock.
Pros: About 44 cents a piece; the bucket doubles as storage; good for sharing with cousins at a holiday gathering.
Cons: Many small parts to pick up; no barn included.

How we chose: Each pick has a real age grade on its listing, sets with a choking warning are rated 3 and up, and one is a Christmas set. Milestone quotes are from the CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." checklists, which describe what most children (75% or more) can do by a certain age. They aren't tests. If you have a concern about your child's development, talk to your pediatrician. The American Academy of Pediatrics says toys work best when caregivers play along, in play "rich in language, pretending, problem-solving, and creativity." We found no CPSC recall for these seven products on Nov. 4. You can search any toy at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
