Century Offers Cash Reward for Recalled Infant Swings
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) Century Products Co., of Macedonia, Ohio, is offering a $30 cash reward for the
repair of each Lil' Napper infant swing. These swings were recalled in 1997 following
reports of three deaths and one near strangulation from entanglement in the swings'
shoulder harness straps. CPSC and Century have since become aware of a fourth death to an
8-month old infant girl in Texas.
CPSC, Firms Recall Cigarette Lighters, and Boys Jackets and Sweatshirts
Penda New York Inc., of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 22,300
novelty and disposable cigarette lighters because they do not have child-resistant
mechanisms and present fire and burn hazards. Montgomery Ward, of Chicago, Ill., is
recalling about 780 boys hooded jackets and sweatshirts because they have hood drawstrings
which can cause entanglement and strangulation if the drawstrings catch on playground
equipment, fences or tree branches.

CPSC, Shine International Trading Co. Inc. Announce Recall of
Cigarette Lighters
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Shine International Trading Co. Inc., of Flushing, N.Y.,
is recalling about 2.4 million cigarette lighters. The lighters child-resistant mechanisms
fail to meet the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Act. Young children could
ignite the lighters, presenting fire and burn hazards. Additionally, the lighters can leak
fuel and remain on after consumers have used them, which also presents fire and burn
hazards.
CPSC, Universal Candle Co. Announce Recall
of Halloween Pumpkin Tealight Candles Sold at Bath & Body Works
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Universal Candle Co., of China, is voluntarily recalling
about 21,000 Halloween pumpkin tealight candles sold at Bath & Body Works. The candles
can burn with a high flame, presenting fire and burn hazards to consumers.
CPSC, Gateway Announce Recall of Foam
Rubber Toy Cows
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Gateway Inc., of San Diego, Calif., is voluntarily
recalling about 1 million foam rubber toy cows. Small pieces of these foam rubber cows can
tear away, posing a serious choking hazard to young children.

Ohio Company Sentenced for Selling Recalled Toys
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) announced today that The Mazel Company, of Solon, Ohio, was sentenced to pay a
criminal penalty of $40,000 after pleading guilty to four counts of selling banned
children's toys. The toys had been recalled by their New Jersey importer in 1996 because
they contained small parts, which posed a choking hazard to young children. However,
following the recall, the importer resold the toys to Mazel. Between August 1996 and
February 1997, Mazel sold approximately 800 Teddy Precious Collectible Bears to small
retail stores throughout the United States.
CPSC Warns Against Placing Babies in Adult
Beds; Study finds 64 deaths each year from suffocation and strangulation
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) is warning parents and caregivers about the dangers of placing babies to sleep in
adult beds. A CPSC study published in the October issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and
Adolescent Medicine found that placing babies to sleep in adult beds puts them at risk of
suffocation or strangulation. This is a danger of which many parents and caregivers are
unaware. The study revealed an average 64 deaths per year to babies under the age of 2
years placed to sleep in adult beds, including waterbeds and daybeds.
CPSC, Firms Announce Recall of Flammable
Spray String
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Enesco Corp., of Itasca, Ill., is recalling the pom- poms from about 472,000
Precious Moments® Tender Tails® stuffed toys. The pom-poms on these toys can detach,
posing a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Backyard Products Announce Recall of
Trapeze Swings on Backyard Gyms
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Backyard Products, of Ontario, Canada, is recalling its
60,000 "Acrobatic Swings," sold with backyard gym sets in the U.S., for in-home
repair. These trapeze swings have exposed bolts that cause serious lacerations to
children.

CPSC, GUESS? Inc. Announce Recall of Liquid-Filled Bubble Patch
Girls' T-Shirts
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), GUESS? Inc., of Los Angeles, Calif., is recalling about 78,000 liquid-filled
bubble patch t-shirts. The liquid in the vinyl bubble patch contains a petroleum
distillate. If the bubble patch is punctured or leaks, the petroleum distillate can be
harmful if ingested.
CPSC, Graco Announce Recall to Repair Activity Trays and Bath Sets
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Graco Childrens Products Inc., of Elverson, Pa., is recalling about 100,000
activity trays and bath sets with suction cups for repair. The suction cups can detach,
presenting a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC Issues Warning to Hurricane Victims to Prevent CO Poisonings,
Electrocutions, Explosions and Fires
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning
hurricane victims that gasoline-powered generators should not be used indoors, because of
the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Also, all gas control valves, electric circuit
breakers, ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), and fuses that have been under water
must be replaced to avoid electrocutions, explosions and fires.
CPSC, Bentley Lingerie Announce Recall of Girls' "Esleep
Juniors" Robes
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Bentley Lingerie Inc., of Jersey City, N.J., is recalling more than 30,000 robes.
The robes fail to meet federal flammability standards for children's sleepwear. The
standards require sleepwear, including robes, to be flame resistant, and if the garment
ignites, the flame must self-extinguish. Failure to meet the flammability standards
presents a risk of serious burn injuries to children.
CPSC, Tiger Electronics, Ltd. Announce Recall to Replace "Pooh
Poppin' Piano" Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Tiger Electronics, Ltd., of Vernon Hills, Ill., is voluntarily recalling to
replace approximately 202,000 Pooh Poppin' Piano toys. The green "leafy" top
section of the carrot-shaped microphone attached to the piano toy can break off, posing a
choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Toys "R" Us Announce Recall of "Bathtub
Baby" Doll Sets
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Toys "R" Us, of Paramus, N.J., is recalling 71,000 Bathtub Baby doll
sets. These doll sets come with a small ball, which poses a serious choking hazard to
children under 3 years old.

CPSC, Shopko Stores Inc. Announce Recall of Infant Garments
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Shopko Stores Inc. of Green Bay, Wis., is recalling approximately 68,000
Peek-A-Babe newborn and infant "creepers," a short-sleeved body suit with two
snaps at the left shoulder and three snaps at the crotch. The snaps can detach, posing a
choking hazard to children.
CPSC, Little Me Announce Recall of Children's Garments with
Ornamental Cherries
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Little Me, Cumberland, Md., is recalling approximately 7,200 newborn and infant
garments described as Mini Fruit Girl's Rompers. The attached ornamental cherries on these
garments pose a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, NIKE Announce Recall of NIKE Sport Waterbottles
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), NIKE USA Inc., of Beaverton, Ore., is voluntarily recalling about 250,000 NIKE
sport waterbottles. The drinking valve on the cap can detach, posing a choking hazard.
CPSC, Polaris Industries Announce Recall to Repair Snowmobiles
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Polaris Industries Inc., of Minneapolis, Minn., is voluntarily recalling about
67,000 snowmobiles. The hydraulic disc brakes on these snowmobiles can fail, resulting in
serious injury or death to riders.
CPSC, Reebok Announce Recall of Children's Side Zip Sneakers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Reebok International Ltd., of Stoughton, Mass., is recalling about 140,000
children's side zip sneakers. The sneaker's side pocket has a pull tab on the zipper that
can be twisted off, presenting a choking and ingestion hazard to children.
CPSC Announces Indictments in Cigarette Lighter Case
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today
that two people have been indicted on charges arising from its investigation into the
removal of child safety mechanisms from disposable cigarette lighters. A federal grand
jury in Tennessee charged Donald M. Anthony of Memphis with seven felony counts, including
obstruction of justice and making false statements to CPSC. His former assistant, Marie A.
Marrese, also of Memphis, faces four similar charges and three additional counts of making
false statements to a grand jury. Anthony and Marrese operated National Marketing, a
now-defunct Memphis business that distributed cigarette lighters and other merchandise to
convenience stores and other distributors nationwide.
CPSC, Bush Industries Inc. Announce Recall of Television Carts
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Bush Industries Inc., of Jamestown, N.Y., is recalling about 100,000 television
carts for repair. The cart can tip over. If the cart tips and the television falls,
children and adults can be injured.
CPSC, Playskool Announce Recall to Replace Spillproof Cup Lids
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Playskool, of Pawtucket, R.I., a division of Hasbro Inc., is voluntarily recalling
about 273,000 spillproof cups. The flexible spout on the cup can tear between the slitted
opening, causing a small piece of material to come loose, posing a choking hazard to young
children.
CPSC, NHTSA and Cosco Announce Recall of Infant Car Seats/Carriers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Cosco Inc. of
Columbus, Ind., is announcing the recall of about 670,000 Arriva and Turnabout infant car
seats/carriers. When used as an infant carrier, the handle locks on each side of the seat
can unexpectedly release, causing the seat to flip forward. When this happens, the infant
can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries.
Shimano to Pay $150,000 Civil Penalty for Alleged Delay in Reporting
Defect with Bicycle Cranks
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today
that Shimano American Corp., of Irvine, Calif., has agreed to pay a civil penalty of
$150,000 to settle allegations that it violated the Consumer Product Safety Act by failing
to report in a timely manner a defect with its FC-CT90, FC-M290 and FC-MC12 bicycle
cranks.
CPSC, Gerber Announce Recall of LIL SPORT Spill Proof Sport
Bottles
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Gerber Products Co., of Summit, N.J., is voluntarily recalling about 300,000
LIL SPORT Spill Proof Sport Bottles. A valve inside the cap can detach, posing a
choking hazard to young children.
CPSC Holds Fireworks Safety Press Conference on Mall in Washington
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) held a press
conference today on the Mall to demonstrate the dangers associated with sparklers, bottle
rockets, and some illegal devices, including M-80s and salutes. Improper use of fireworks
or use of illegal fireworks can result in deaths, blindings, amputations and severe burns.
CPSC Announces Indictments in Multistate Fireworks Investigation
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in cooperation
with the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin today announced that three
people have been indicted, and two others have agreed to plead guilty to federal charges
resulting from a multistate illegal fireworks investigation. These are the first
indictments and plea agreements in an on- going investigation that has been expanded to
other states including Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri and Washington.
