How to Move Outdoor Toys Out

Finding Space to Play Makes the Sale

By Alison Marek
April 2007

“When our town has its summer street party, we have an outdoor play area where kids and parents can play or ride some of our toys.” Paula Tremba, One Two Kangaroo
With additional reporting by regional correspondents Dennis Furlan and Brenda Ruggiero

With just a few months to sell outdoor toys, they’ve got to move quickly, 18 specialty toy-store owners told TDmonthly Magazine. Demos — live or on tape — help build excitement and get the toys going.

What Sells … and How

Beam-Os by Stuff Designs are “still popular,” Danny Givens, owner of Little Dickens in Lynchburg, Va., told TDmonthly, and four other storeowners agreed.

“We have [sales]people playing with them in the parking lot all the time,” noted Jacquie Lambertson, owner of Noodles & Noggins in temperate Clifton, Va.

“Water toys” and “sprinklers” are suddenly hot, said Paula Tremba, owner of One Two Kangaroo in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Gwen Bowden, manager of Doodlehopper 4 Kids in Springfield, Va., respectively.

“Retro outdoor games” was a trend spotted by Jude Larene, owner of Izilla Toys in Seattle. “I've seen some really fun takes on outdoor bean bag games. We sell a lot of parachutes.”

Anything that gets kids moving is doing well, agreed Givens: “Obesity is a big issue.”

Manufacturers are on the heels of the anti-obesity trend, too. "It's about getting people away from electronics and closer to healthy play," Patricia Littwin, inventor of Ttalf’s Yackle Ball, explained to TDmonthly.

Sell Big Toys in Small Spaces

But healthy play takes space. For retailers without parking lots, “in front of the store” was a popular spot for showcasing.

“We have a kite window as well, which takes some doing — to assemble them, get books out on them,” shared Sallie Scott, owner of The Learning Tree in Missoula, Mont.

Aisle end caps and video demos are another solution: “We have DVDs on a TV going all the time,” offered Givens.

Use Others’ Space

Even the smallest store can find a place to let the kids play, said Tremba, who also uses newsletters to promote her toys. “When our town has its summer street party we have an outdoor play area where kids and parents can play or ride some of our toys,” she said.

What’s New

As for the next big hit, Jeanne McCullough, owner of Children's Store Inc. in Boise, Idaho, is keeping her eye on International Playthings' Wham-O Mini Frisbee Golf, she toldTDmonthly. “It looks very cool. The chain stops the [mini flying disc] and it goes into a basket.”

What to Make of It

Playing outside begins in the toy store. Following are some toys to get kids moving.
