Hit Series Keep Kids Coming Back

By Karen Mendez Smith
March 1, 2003

We all know J. K. Rowling books have been flying off the shelves like wizards on broomsticks. But there’s an alternate universe of children’s series-books that, collectively, make Harry Potter’s legions seem newt-sized.

Primary Considerations

THE LITTLE MERMAID/LAS SIRENITA is nicely retold by Oriol Izquierdo as part of Chronicle’s BILINGUAL FAIRY TALE SERIES. Tomi DiPaola’s latest STREGA NONA TAKES A VACATION (Puffin) continues the adventures of this memorable character. Television, of course, continues its influence with ARTHUR AND
THE 1001 DADS
by Marc Brown (Taggart Point #26).

The Case for Easy Readers

THE CASE OF THE FIDGETY FOX/HIGH-RISE PRIVATE EYES

Young readers love a good mystery as much as the ‘tween set, and animal detectives Bunny and Jack will keep them guessing as they follow the trail of some missing dice in THE CASE OF THE FIDGETY FOX/HIGH-RISE PRIVATE EYES (Greenwillow) by award-winning author Cynthia Rylant. A rooster who regains his cluck after swallowing a bug is the subject of ELVIS THE ROOSTER ALMOST GOES TO HEAVEN/I CAN READ/MINNIE AND MOO (HarperCollins) by Denys Cazet. The family cat is up for grabs in THE CAT WHO GOT CARRIED AWAY (Candlewick), the third Gaskett family episode by Allan Ahlberg.

Fabulous Fiction for 4th Graders and Up

Kids crave comedy. They’ll get their fair share in DRAT! YOU COPYCAT the first in a not-so-serious new series, KATIE KAZOO, SWITCHEROO, by Nancy Krulik (Grosset & Dunlap). Walter Farley’s beloved horse returns in THE BLACK STALLION CHALLENGED! (Random House). Madison Finn sets out to find the identity of a secret admirer in LIGHTS OUT/FROM THE FILES OF MADISON FINN, #12 from Volo.

Young Adults Ante Up

SISTER SPY/ALIAS #4 (Bantam) finds a built-in audience with fans of the television series, as will CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON/ #4, a graphic novel by Andy Seto from ComicsOne. Finally, YA readers in the know will want to check out Cecily von Ziegesar’s second book, ALL I WANT IS EVERYTHING/A GOSSIP GIRL NOVEL (Little, Brown).
