R/C Craziness:
By Tim Sullivan

In looking for R/C cars, trucks and the like to report on, I stumbled across many unique and interesting toys. A few of those I just had to mention, despite their incredible lack of having anything to do with cars. Here are a few real cool products that shout for attention:

Power Air Surfer R/C Airplane

Power Air Surfer R/C Airplane
Would you rather sit back and let your flying objects do all the work themselves? Well, WowWee almost has you there. You have to toss the plane into the air by hand, but once it is airborne, feel free to take a seat. This bi-plane can get as high as 100 feet, and is designed to never crash. I think of that as a challenge, and thus should probably not be given this toy. The R/C control allows you to change the altitude, speed, and direction of the plane. Affordably priced, the Power Air Surfer is opening up this once exclusive hobby to just about anyone.

The Vectron

The Vectron

The Vectron is just what it looks like a flying saucer. With controls similar to those of a R/C helicopter, the Vectron flies via the use of its three engines. An infrared beam sent to the Vectron from the controller allows the ship to always know where the pilot is standing, and thus always moves accordingly. Built in LEDs that encircle the ship allow for programmed readouts of up to 30 characters. And the Vectron is inexpensive! Sound awesome? It is. The Vectron is very cool. It does, of course, have one drawback: it is constantly tethered to the ground by its 10 foot power cord. Thus, it has a limited flight range, which is further limited as you must be near a power outlet as well. One bonus to this set-up that another reviewer caught is: unlimited power. Most R/C units suffer from energy problems. You are either constantly recharging or constantly purchasing energy sources. Not so with the Vectron. An excellent craft for R/C aircraft beginners.

Edge Hovercraft

The Edge Hovercraft
The Edge Hovercraft, by Taiyo, is one cool R/C vehicle. An air compressor in the vehicle draws air in and inflates the air bag underneath the body. The Hovercraft is then powered and steered using two rear-facing propellers. The makers of the toy, Taiyo, claim that they are “aircraft-style props,” and while I would not attribute that much strength to them, from what I have seen this thing can move. The best part about the Hovercraft is, not only does it move, it goes across both land and water. It’s so cool that Sharper Image has licensed its own version from the company.
