TV On Steroids: The Latest On Console Gaming
By Lynn A. Powers and TDmonthly.com Staff

It’s time to begin Holiday shopping, and one gift certain to light up a recipient’s eyes is a video game system. The 3 hottest video game consoles available are the Microsoft Xbox, Sony Playstation 2 and Nintendo Game Box.

Microsoft Xbox
Microsoft Xbox
Last year, Microsoft stormed the market with their newest console unit and it’s still one of the most versatile around. The Xbox supports both DVD and CD-ROMs, with 64 MB RAM installed and an Intel Pentium III 733 MHz processor. It has a built-in adapter, 8 GB hard drive for music and saved-game storage, and high-resolution display support. The downsides to the Xbox are its bulky size, making it inconvenient to transport, and the need for a separate kit to unlock its DVD viewing capabilities.

Microsoft’s newest feature is Xbox Live, a beta version of its online multiplayer gaming service that is played on the Internet via broadband.

The top 5 new releases for the Xbox are:
TITLE

Hitman 2

Sony Playstation 2

Sony PlayStation 2
Compared to the Xbox’s 733 MHz processor, the PlayStation 2 is equipped with a 300 MHz processor but is still considered to deliver enhanced and clear graphics. This console plays most of the original PlayStation games as well as a large catalog of newer games. It doubles as both a CD and DVD player. This game system does not yet have Internet or hard drive peripherals. The newest peripheral is the DUALSHOCK® analog controller that has 2 independent force feedback units.

The top 5 new releases for the PlayStation 2 are:

Nintendo Gamecube
Nintendo GameCube
The Nintendo GameCube is the most affordable of the game systems. Tiny and nearly portable, this system has no DVD or audio CD support, but it offers great graphics and good performance. Gamecube comes equipped with a PowerPC 485 MHz processor with 40 MB RAM installed. Most of the titles are geared towards a younger audience. The newest peripheral for the GameCube is the WaveBird Wireless Controller that allows you to play your favorite games without worrying about cumbersome cords.

The top 5 new releases for the GameCube are:
