Have you ever heard a word that triggered you to sing a song? Well, you’re not alone. And when game inventor Rob Ridgeway saw—and heard—it happen during a get-together with friends and family, an idea was born.

“We spent two hours just saying words and singing songs,” Rob said. “The more we played, the harder we laughed. And that’s when it clicked: this would be a fantastic board game!”

Easy-to-learn and easy-to-play, Spontuneous is a combination of traditional board game and spur-of-the moment improvisation. Players create a “Hit-List” of words from songs they know; then take turns trying to stump each other.

Reaction to the new game has been exceptional. During the 2010 holiday season, over 5,000 Spontuneous games were sold from a single Billings, Montana kiosk and online at spontuneous.com. Reviews on the website include comments like “Even my daughters at age 8 and 11 could play...and even did quite well. I would recommend this game to anyone!”, and “Played it tonight after Christmas and we had a blast! If you‘re worried about NOT being musically inclined, DONT WORRY, I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.”

“I think it really resonates with singles and families who are looking for something fun and new,” Rob says. “It crosses all genres and generations; everyone can play together.”

Spontuneous™ - The Classic Edition
Spontuneous™ – How Does It Work?
Have you ever heard a word that triggered you to sing a song? If so, then YOU are Spontuneous™! One player says a word and the race is on for the others to sing a song containing that word. The game Spontuneous™ Challenges players to think of lyrics to songs they know and love. It’s fun, fast paced and full of laughs!

In turn, each player serves as “Tunesmith”, announcing a word from his or her Hit-List. The others race to sing at least a 5-word portion of lyrics from any real song containing the Trigger-Word. The first to do so within 15 seconds rolls the dice and advances on the board. If time expires and everyone is stumped, the Tunesmith can advance by singing a song with the Trigger-Word, but is penalized if he or she too is stumped. The first player to reach “Finish” on the treble clef-shaped path wins—but only after winning the Spontuneous challenge.

“The best part is that players don’t have to sing the song the Tunesmith was thinking of,” said Rob. “Even a version of the word can be used; for instance, if the Trigger-Word is ‘eight’, a song containing ‘ate’ or even ‘eating’ counts. It’s pretty funny to hear some of the songs people know!”

The game also includes “Spontuneous” cards, which require players to perform a variety of hilarious acts upon landing on certain spaces. Singing, dancing and whistling are all fair game!

Spontuneous™ - Basic Rules: Quick Start
Spontuneous™ - Consumers Speak Out
1. Think of a song you know, choose a word (not a phrase) from those lyrics and write it down on your Hitlist. This word is called a Trigger-Word. Think of another song and repeat.

2. Play begins once all players have written down a few (3 to 5)Trigger-Words.

3. The 1st Tunesmith flips the 15 second timer and announces a Trigger-Word from their Hitlist.

4. The other players race against each other to sing a 5-word portion of ANY song containing the given Trigger-Word.

5. The 1st player to BEGIN singing BEFORE the time expires rolls both dice and advances on the treble clef. (Refer to SCORING)

6. If time expires and everyone is stumped, the Tunesmith must prove they know a song by singing a 5-word portion of lyrics containing their own Trigger-Word. (Refer to STUMPING)

7. If the Tunesmith can prove it, they roll both dice and advance. If they can’t prove it, they must roll both dice and move backwards. (Refer to STUMPING)

8. The person to the left of the original Tunesmith becomes the next Tunesmith and attempts to stump the others with a Trigger-Word from their Hitlist. The Tunesmith position ALWAYS rotates clockwise.

9. If a player lands on a Spontuneous® Treble Clef, they must draw a Spontuneous® Card and complete the challenge.

10. The 1st player to reach finish and complete the Spontuneous® Challenge WINS!

I played this game with my 25 year old daughter and her boyfriend this weekend. It was such a blast that I simply have to have one for us “old duffers” who know ALL the songs from the last 50+ years. But, the way it is set up, it really doesn’t matter what age you are as so many potential songs are out there of all ages or generations with great words to use as stumpers.

Just got done playing Spontuneous for the first time--and loved it! Played it with a group of twenty-somethings and we are getting together to play it again this weekend. I would definitely recommend this game to everyone! It's great to see such a great game come from Montana.

Heard about this game, played it without the board and finally ordered a few for gifts. What fun! Called customer support and Rob and I sang a few tunes after he answered all my questions. With the multiple players option, I'll take it to the seniors' center and hear some real oldies (songs). Thanks Rob!
