Tri-Cross

Family Game Goes Mainstream After Decades

As with so many successful toys, dolls and games (think Raggedy Ann!), Tri-Cross began as a family venture. Though the inventor didn’t have the resources at the time to develop, market and produce the game on a large scale, in 2008 he’s ready for the big time. Here’s how one candidate for Toy Frenzy!TDmonthly Magazine’s proposed documentary on Toy Fair — explains his journey:

Twenty-two years ago, a father with a wife and three young sons and a struggling business had the idea to design a game. He wanted to design a game that could be learned and played out within a short period of time and also become increasingly challenging. He wanted it to become a new strategy board game like chess, checkers, dominoes, etc.

TRI-CROSS MAKES AN ENTRANCE

He had a few hundred made in 1986 and they sold out in Atlanta stores such as Mori Luggage and Gifts and the Sword of the Phoenix game stores. The owner of the Sword of the Phoenix game stores, Dan Ackerman, listed it in Games Magazine as his recommendation for “the best new strategy game of 1987.”

When asked, “What is the game like?” Dan Ackerman would always say, “It’s really not like anything else.”

Due to finances and other pressing issues, though, the father didn’t follow up and allowed the game to collect dust on the shelf.

IMPROVED GAME GOES FOR SECOND DEBUT

Through the years, his sons would play the old game and tell him how good it was. They often asked him why he didn’t put it back out on the market. Last year, the father finally found the time and the enthusiasm — because of his wife’s and sons’ continuous prodding (all three sons are now Georgia Tech graduates) — and decided to reintroduce the game, Tri-Cross™.

The rules remain the same, but the packaging, board and game pieces have been immensely improved. The game can be played with two to four players from ages 10 to adult, and includes team play and five variations of play.
