Best Toys and Gifts for 13-Year-Olds 2026: 8 Screen-Free Picks for Builders and Game Night

Building, science, game night, art and a caster board, from $13.30 to $64.95

Shopping for a 13-year-old is hard. They are too old for most of the toy aisle, they have strong opinions, and many of them would happily take a gift card. But the right present still lands: something to build that looks good on a shelf, a game that gets the whole family laughing, or a skill they can practise on their own. These eight screen-free picks, from $13.30 to $64.95, cover building and science, three games for family and friends, an art set and a caster board. We checked each Amazon listing on Nov. 1, 2026 (and rechecked prices and stock that night), for its age grade, price, stock and safety warnings, and we list every small-parts, magnet and chemical warning we found.

Quick list

  • Best build: LEGO Technic Ford Bronco 42213 ($51.99)
  • Best science gift: Thames & Kosmos Chem C1000 ($64.95)
  • Best pocket challenge: GAN 356 M Speed Cube ($27.99)
  • Best strategy game: Splendor ($31.99)
  • Best card game for a crowd: Skull King ($19.99)
  • Best party game: Telestrations 8-Player ($31.99)
  • Best small art gift: Crayola Brush & Detail Markers ($13.30)
  • Best for getting outside: Razor RipStik ($63.76)

What many 13-year-olds are going through

The CDC's milestone checklists end at age 5, so for teens we turn to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Its HealthyChildren.org guide to the stages of adolescence puts "early adolescence" at ages 10 to 13 and "middle adolescence" at 14 to 17, so a 13-year-old sits right at the turn. In early adolescence, the guide says, "Pre-teens feel an increased need for privacy. They may start to explore ways of being independent from their family." It also notes that early adolescents tend to have "concrete, black-and-white thinking," and that by middle adolescence teens "are more able to think abstractly and consider 'the big picture.'" The same guide explains that the brain's frontal lobes, which "play a big role in coordinating complex decision making, impulse control, and being able to consider multiple options and consequences," are still developing well into a person's 20s. (HealthyChildren.org (AAP), Stages of Adolescence)

The CDC's free Essentials for Parenting Teens series, written for parents of kids 11 to 17, covers topics such as encouraging teen independence and praising your teen. (CDC, Essentials for Parenting Teens)

That shaped this list. Several picks are things a 13-year-old can do on their own and get better at over time (a cube, a caster board, a chemistry set, lettering). Others are games that make it easy to spend an hour together without it feeling like a family meeting. Planning several turns ahead in Splendor or bidding exactly right in Skull King gives a teen a low-stakes way to practise weighing options, and the board does not care who wins.

How we picked

We chose screen-free gifts from eight different makers, each graded for ages 13 on its Amazon listing or with a lower minimum age that a 13-year-old clears. We opened every listing on Nov. 1, 2026, between about 9:13 and 9:16 AM PT (prices and stock rechecked at 11:22 PM PT), to record the age grade, the price, the seller, stock and every safety line, and we checked U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall data for each brand and product; none of these products matched a recall. None of them appeared in our earlier age guides. The skills we mention describe how teens tend to use each gift, not a promise about what any product does.

The AAP's Family Media Plan is a free tool families can use to "set media priorities that matter most to your family, in line with your values and routines." A game shelf and a weekend project are an easy way to put some of those priorities on the calendar. (HealthyChildren.org (AAP), Family Media Plan)

A safety note before you shop: every pick here carries a small-parts or under-3 warning, so keep pieces, tokens, caps and chemicals away from babies and toddlers in the house. The AAP's toy-buying tips start with "Read the label" and say to be careful with toys that have button or coin batteries or high-powered magnets. One pick (the speed cube) contains magnets and one (the chemistry set) contains chemicals; none uses batteries. (HealthyChildren.org (AAP), How to Buy Safe Toys)

For builders and tinkerers

1. LEGO Technic Ford Bronco 42213 (ages 9+)

LEGO Technic Ford Bronco 42213 red and black model SUV

This 943-piece Technic set builds a red-and-black Ford Bronco with working suspension, functional steering, opening doors and a V6 engine under a lifting hood, per the listing. The finished model is about 11 inches long. Technic suits a 13-year-old who has outgrown play sets but still likes to build: the steering and suspension are real mechanisms, so the instruction booklet doubles as a lesson in how a car moves. It ends up as a shelf model rather than a toy, which many teens prefer. Sold by Amazon.com at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's manufacturer recommended age is "9 years and up" (the title says ages 10+). It shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." No batteries or magnets.

Price: $51.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • A long, satisfying build with real working mechanisms
  • Looks good on a shelf when it is done
  • Sold by Amazon at check time

Cons:

  • Over $50
  • Hundreds of small pieces to keep away from younger siblings

2. Thames & Kosmos Chem C1000 (V 2.0) Beginner Chemistry Set (ages 10+)

Thames and Kosmos Chem C1000 chemistry set box with test tubes and lab manual

A real starter chemistry lab: glass test tubes, two graduated beakers, a funnel, droppers, safety glasses and seven chemicals, with an 80-page full-color manual that walks through 125 experiments. The listing says kids make invisible inks, separate marker pigments with chromatography, build a mini fire extinguisher and make electricity from a chemical reaction. It is a good next step for a 13-year-old who has outgrown kitchen-science kits, and it works best as a weekend project with a parent at the table. Sold by Amazon.com at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's manufacturer recommended age is "10 - 20 years", and it says "ages 10+ with adult supervision." Its safety information reads: "Chemistry Set. This set contains chemicals [and/or parts] that may be harmful if misused. Read cautions on individual containers [and in manual] carefully. Not to be used by children except under adult supervision." It also shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." Store the chemicals out of reach of younger children. No batteries or magnets.

Price: $64.95 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • 125 experiments, so it lasts for months
  • Real glassware and safety glasses included
  • Clear manual with the science behind each step

Cons:

  • The priciest pick here
  • Needs an adult on hand, by the maker's own rule

3. GAN 356 M Magnetic Speed Cube 3x3 (ages 3+ on the listing)

GAN 356 M magnetic 3x3 speed cube, stickerless

A mid-range speed cube with built-in magnets that help the layers snap into place, plus an adjustable tension system the listing calls GES+. Learning to solve a 3x3 is a classic 13-year-old challenge: there are free beginner methods everywhere, progress is easy to measure with a timer, and it fits in a pocket. This model is a step up from a basic cube for a kid who already turns one every day. Sold by the GAN Cube store at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's manufacturer recommended age is "3 years and up". It shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." and "WARNING: This product contains small magnets. Swallowed magnets can stick together across intestines causing serious infections and death. Seek immediate medical attention if magnets are swallowed or inhaled." The AAP advises families to check toys with magnets often "for cracks where a magnet could come loose," so retire a cracked cube and keep it away from toddlers. (HealthyChildren.org (AAP)) No batteries.

Price: $27.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • Under $30 for a cube made for speed
  • Endless, self-paced challenge with a clear goal
  • Pocket-size, so it travels

Cons:

  • Contains magnets, so it is not for homes where small children could get at a broken one
  • Sold by the brand store, not Amazon, at check time

For game night with family and friends

All three of these play in under an hour, teach in a few minutes and work as well with adults as with other teens. For more games, see our Best Hidden-Identity and Deduction Games for Family Game Night 2026, which runs from age 4 to teens.

4. Asmodee Splendor (ages 10+)

Splendor board game box with gem tokens and development cards

A modern classic for 2 to 4 players. On each turn you do one of three things: take gem tokens, buy a development card, or reserve a card for later. The cards you buy give permanent discounts, so you build a small economic engine and race to 15 prestige points in about 30 minutes, per the listing. The listing calls it quick to learn, with just three actions per turn, while the timing and long-term planning keep adults interested, so it works for a table that mixes teens, parents and grandparents. Sold by Amazon.com at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's manufacturer recommended age is "10 years and up". It shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." The 40 poker-chip-style tokens are small. No batteries or magnets.

Price: $31.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • Quick to teach, deep enough for adults
  • About 30 minutes a game

Cons:

  • Best with three or four players
  • The theme (Renaissance gem merchants) is dry for some kids

5. Grandpa Beck's Games Skull King (ages 8-14)

Skull King trick-taking card game box and pirate cards

A pirate-themed trick-taking card game for 2 to 8 players. Each round you predict exactly how many tricks you will win, then try to hit that number, with pirates, mermaids and the Skull King himself bending the usual rules. The listing gives a 30 to 45 minute play time. It handles big groups, so it works for a sleepover or a holiday table with cousins, and the bidding adds just enough risk to keep teens leaning in. Sold by Grandpa Beck's Games at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's manufacturer recommended age is "8 - 14 years". It shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." No batteries or magnets.

Price: $19.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • The cheapest game here, under $20
  • Plays up to 8, so it fits a crowd
  • Small box that travels

Cons:

  • Scoring takes a round or two to click
  • Sold by the publisher, not Amazon, at check time

6. USAopoly Telestrations 8-Player (2nd Edition) (ages 10+)

Telestrations 8-player party game box with sketchbooks and markers

The sketch-and-guess party game: everyone draws a prompt, passes their sketchbook, the next player guesses what it is, the next draws that guess, and so on around the table. The box has 8 reusable sketchbooks, 8 dry-erase markers and cards with more than 2,000 prompts, per the listing, for 4 to 8 players. As the listing puts it, "The worse your drawing, the funnier the game," which takes the pressure off self-conscious teens. Sold by Amazon.com at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's manufacturer recommended age is "10 years" (minimum age 10). It shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." No batteries or magnets.

Price: $31.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • No art skill needed, and bad drawings are the point
  • Up to 8 players
  • Reusable sketchbooks

Cons:

  • Needs at least 4 players
  • Dry-erase markers wear out and need replacing

For making things and moving

The CDC says "Children and adolescents 6 to 17 need to be active for at least 60 minutes every day," and suggests you "Encourage children to do activities they enjoy." (CDC, Child Activity: An Overview) A creative hobby and a ride-on with a learning curve both give a 13-year-old something of their own to get good at.

7. Crayola Signature Brush & Detail Dual Tip Markers (16 count) (ages 5+ on the listing)

Crayola Brush and Detail dual tip markers in a decorative tin

Sixteen dual-ended markers, each with a brush tip and an ultra-fine tip, for 32 colors in a storage tin. The listing says brush markers are popular for practicing calligraphy and hand lettering, and pairs them with adult coloring books. For a 13-year-old who doodles, journals or letters signs for school events, it is a small, grown-up-feeling art gift. The listing calls them "safe & nontoxic, ideal for artists aged 9 & up." Sold by a third-party seller (HOUSE SMART) at check time.

Age and safety: the listing's Toy Safety field gives a manufacturer's minimum age of 5 years, and its age range reads "Adult, Teen, Kid." It shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." (the caps are small). No batteries or magnets.

Price: $13.30 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • The cheapest pick, under $15
  • Two tips in one marker
  • Tin keeps them together

Cons:

  • Sold by a third-party seller at check time, so check the price before you buy
  • Brush tips fray if pressed hard

8. Razor RipStik Caster Board (Classic) (ages 8+)

Silver Razor RipStik caster board with two caster wheels

A two-wheeled caster board with a twisting torsion bar: you move it by wiggling your hips and feet, so it rides like a mix of surfing and snowboarding. The listing says the 360-degree caster wheels and 76 mm urethane wheels give a smooth ride, and that it holds riders up to 220 lbs, so a 13-year-old will not outgrow it. Expect a few wobbly days before it clicks. Sold by Amazon.com at check time.

Age and safety: the listing title says "For Kids and Adults Age 8+", and its age range field reads "Youth." The page shows "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." and a California Proposition 65 notice ("WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm - www.P65Warnings.ca.gov"). Budget for a helmet and pads: the AAP says "All skateboarders and scooter-riders should wear protective gear; helmets are particularly important for preventing and minimizing head injuries," that "Protective wrist, elbow and kneepads should be worn," and that "Children should never ride skateboards or scooters in or near moving traffic." (HealthyChildren.org (AAP)) No batteries or magnets.

Price: $63.76 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Nov. 1, 2026)

Pros:

  • A real skill to learn, and fun once it clicks
  • Holds up to 220 lbs, per the listing
  • Sold by Amazon at check time

Cons:

  • Steep learning curve at first
  • Helmet and pads are an extra purchase

Free ideas that work just as well

A deck of cards covers a lot of what this list is about: teach a 13-year-old a trick-taking game such as Spades or Hearts and let them run the next family game night. Hand over the planning for one weekend outing or one family dinner, within a budget. Walk, bike or shoot hoops together for part of that daily hour of activity. And ask what they are into right now, then really listen to the answer; the best gift for this age is often whatever lets them go deeper into it.

If you have questions about development

Every teen grows at their own pace, and the changes described above are what many young teens go through, not a checklist. If you have questions or concerns about your child's development, mood, learning or behavior, talk to your pediatrician.
