Jetfire by PAUL K. GUILLOW INC.
Jetfire by PAUL K. GUILLOW INC.

A high performance balsa wood flyer with the style of a jet fighter, this baby has a large 12" wing span with a built-in dihedral. Its colorful style prints on the wing, tail surfaces and canopy give it a very fun-tech look. Even though balsa wood gliders have been around for over half a century, they’re a perennial favorite.
― “[Jetfire] balsa planes have done very well,” said Teresa Ford, owner of Kid's Ketch in Lewes, Del. She reported sales of approximately 20 per month during an April 2010 survey of top-selling activity kits.
— Owner Michelle Bears of the Toy Store in Highlands, N.C., said she sells approximately 15 per month. Where do all those gliders land? When hiking at the bottom of a mountain one day, she found ''many crashed airplanes,'' she told TDmonthly in Fall 2010. 10/3/2006 (Price: $1.49) [Add to my Inquiry Basket][?]

This glider soars through air and water in a unique way:  when it’s launched, air (or water) is directed along the fuselage, over the coanda and is entrained into the duct. The internal wing, or the bottom of the duct, accelerates the flow, creating enhanced lift. A power launcher is included for extra distance. 10/3/2006 (Price: $12.99) [Add to my Inquiry Basket][?]

Virtual Speed Baseball by SMALL WORLD TOYS
Virtual Speed Baseball by SMALL WORLD TOYS

The Virtual Speed Baseball is just like a real baseball, with a leather cover and stitching. The difference is that it clocks the speed of a throw with an LCD display that’s powered by non-replaceable batteries. So, although you can throw it, you can’t hit it. It’s a specialty item that’s neat for all kids but can be used as a training tool for up-and-coming baseball players, too.
— “Small World Toys has a baseball that you can throw and it will tell you how fast you’re throwing. That’s been popular,” described Terri Bracken, owner of Earth Explorers Toys in Zionsville, Ind.
— “Virtual Speed Baseball,” was the answer given by Warren Brown, owner of French’s Toy Shop in Concord, N.H. when asked about top-selling fitness toys in his store.
— Lisa Orman, public relations rep for Small World Toys told TDmonthly, “Children love to challenge themselves, and the Virtual Speed Baseball allows them to challenge themselves again and again, and try to beat their ‘best throw.’ It lasts for more than 100,000 throws!” 9/21/2006 (Price: $21.99) [Add to my Inquiry Basket][?]

Double Kicksled by MOUNTAIN BOY SLEDWORKS
Double Kicksled by MOUNTAIN BOY SLEDWORKS

Mountain Boy Sledworks, an innovative sledmaking company in the small Colorado mountain town of Silverton, has introduced an artistic interpretation of the time-tested Norwegian kicksled. The unique sleds, first used in the late 1800s, are pure joy to kick down an icy street or hard-packed nordic trail. Unlike other sleds, you pilot from behind while standing: one foot stays on a metal runner as the other foot kicks the sled into action. When one leg gets tired, you switch. And the sleds are much more stable and easy to use than a pair of skis, for instance. Plus, you can take a friend along: your lucky side-kick sits in a semi-reclined wooden deckchair, takes in the sights and enjoys the ride. For the pilot, it's a great workout. For the rider, it's less bumpy than other sleds.

Mountain Boy kicksleds combine elegant design with fine craftsmanship. Most striking is the handle, a carefully chosen, hand-carved piece of native willow. The structure of the sled is American ash, known for its strength and flexibility. The slats that make the very comfortable slatted seat are figured maple, attached with stainless-steel screws, and a copper bar makes a simple, sturdy footrest. The kicksled’s runners are highly flexible tempered steel, with polished and waxed edges and large footplates for the pilot. Rings are welded to the front of each runner, making it simple to attach a bridle and tugline for dogsledding.

Because each kicksled is a one-of-a-kind work, each is signed and numbered on the bottom by the sledmaker. The Sledworks makes three sizes of kicksled: the classic Silverton Kicksled, which seats one adult or child; the unique Double Kicksled, which seats two children and has bright red hand rails; and the Children's Kicksled, which is sized for children aged 6 to 10.
