Writer Invests Self in All 4 Kidz

Author Turns Traditional Dilemma Into Innovative Material

“Our books are true to ourselves.” Angela E. Davis-Lewis, All 4 Kidz Enterprises
Most writers know that being published involves getting an agent and suffering rejection and disappointment. But Angela E. Davis-Lewis of All 4 Kidz Enterprises avoided these traditional obstacles by creating her own publishing company that offers multi-cultural titles and educational materials.

In 2005, Davis-Lewis, a retired educator and early childhood specialist, and her husband, Robert E. Lewis, a retiree who served as a school principal for more than 26 years, teamed up with illustrator Darrell Spicy to create All 4 Kidz Enterprises. The company has released 18 books, but the road to success had its detours, Davis-Lewis told TDmonthly Magazine.

SELF-PUBLISHING A DREAM

Although she had written books that she had shared in her classroom, Davis-Lewis still had to “learn all the ins and outs of publishing.”

And what she found wasn’t always promising: “Publishers wanted to change the books’ format, pricing, everything. They wanted smaller books and different drawings.” Loath to change a format that her training told her would help children, Davis-Lewis opted for self-publishing.

“We have much more control,” she explained. “We’re different, and that’s OK. We have had great feedback from our readers and from the people we meet when we travel. They’re amazed at the illustrations. Readers tell us all the time, ‘I’ve never seen a book like this before.’”

A GOOD DIFFERENCE

Being different has earned All 4 Kidz Enterprises a dedicated following and praise from more than 40 educators. According to Davis-Lewis, it has meant success: “In the classroom, we didn’t have these types of books — books that are truly multicultural and offer real stories.”

Plus, she explained, “Our books offer language development. You can play the CD and have the children read along, so that they learn to recognize the words. We also use very rich language in our books, not the sort of ‘I see the cat’ books, but books that offer real immersion.”

PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF

The couple must travel frequently to promote their books, Davis-Lewis added, which gives her the opportunity to meet with readers and educators. She noted, though, that major bookstores are not always eager to stock self-published works.

Despite the challenges, All 4 Kidz Enterprises is prospering. Davis-Lewis has penned more books that are scheduled to be published later this year, and the company offers other educational materials, including multicultural number, color and alphabet cards, border trimmers, books and CDs.

All 4 Kidz Enterprises is living out the kind of inspirational story that its books encapsulate. And that’s something we can all learn from.
