Grandparent-Approved Card Games: 10 Games Every Generation Can Win (2026)

Giant UNO, Skip-Bo, Rat-a-Tat Cat, Phase 10, Five Crowns, Sushi Go and more, with prices and ages

The best card games for a grandparent and a grandchild have short rules, cards that are easy to read, rounds under about 20 minutes, and enough luck that a 7-year-old can beat a lifelong player. Those are the four tests we applied to every game below, from Mattel classics to small-publisher picks. Prices and stock were checked on Amazon on Oct. 26, 2026.

What the research says, and doesn't. For kids, card games are one of the CDC's own suggestions: its milestone page for 5-year-olds lists "Follows rules or takes turns when playing games with other children" and suggests parents "play card games" among games that help with memory and attention (CDC). For older adults, the evidence is an association, not proof: a Scottish study that followed 1,091 people born in 1936 found that those who played non-digital games more often had higher thinking scores at age 70 and less decline from 70 to 79, after accounting for childhood IQ, education and health (Altschul & Deary, 2020). It was observational, so it doesn't show that games prevent decline. A 2024 review of 17 studies of school-age children learning alongside older adults found most reported better attitudes and well-being on both sides, though the authors flag methodological flaws (Tsiloni et al., 2024). In short: these are good ways to spend time together, not brain training.

Easiest to Start

Mattel Games Giant UNO ($15.39, ages 7+)

Mattel Games Giant UNO card game box

Plain UNO rules with cards three times the usual size and color-blind-friendly symbols, so they're easy to read across the table. 2 to 10 players; includes two blank wild cards for house rules. Giant UNO on Amazon.

Pros: Easiest cards to see in this list; everyone already knows the rules; up to 10 players
Cons: Big cards are awkward for small hands; mostly luck

Mattel Games Skip-Bo ($17.99, ages 7+)

Mattel Games Skip-Bo card game box

Players build piles in order from 1 to 12, so the only skill needed to start is counting. 2 to 6 players. A classic many grandparents already know. Skip-Bo on Amazon.

Pros: Simple to explain; more than 40,000 ratings
Cons: No storage tin in this edition; contains small parts (choking warning for under 3)

Gamewright Rat-a-Tat Cat ($10.56, ages 6+)

Gamewright Rat-a-Tat Cat card game box

Players try to end with the lowest total by peeking at and remembering their face-down cards. It was a 1996 Mensa Select winner, according to American Mensa's own winners list. 2 to 6 players. Rat-a-Tat Cat on Amazon.

Pros: Youngest age grade here; verified Mensa Select award; light addition practice
Cons: Memory-heavy, so the youngest players may need hints

For Rummy Fans

Mattel Games Phase 10 in Storage Tin ($11.54, ages 7+)

Mattel Games Phase 10 card game in storage tin

A rummy-style race through 10 phases of sets and runs, with a color-blind-accessible deck and a tin for travel. An Amazon exclusive. Phase 10 on Amazon.

Pros: Tin makes it easy to bring to Grandma's; long enough to fill a visit
Cons: A full 10-phase game can run long for young kids; play fewer phases

PlayMonster Five Crowns ($9.99, ages 8+)

PlayMonster Five Crowns card game box

Rummy with five suits and a wild card that changes every round; up to 7 players. Adults who grew up on rummy pick it up fast. Five Crowns on Amazon.

Pros: Cheapest pick; familiar to adults; more than 34,000 ratings
Cons: Needs a score pad and some adding, so it's best from about 8

Silly and Fast

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza ($9.95, ages 8+ per Amazon's age field)

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza card game box

Players say "taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza" as they flip cards and slap the pile when the word matches the card. Reflexes beat experience. 2 to 8 players; the listing title says ages 7+. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza on Amazon.

Pros: 10-minute rounds; kids often win; more than 55,000 ratings
Cons: Slapping can be rough on frail hands; loud

Gamewright Sleeping Queens ($19.99, ages 8+)

Gamewright Sleeping Queens card game box

Players wake sleeping queen cards using kings, knights and simple math equations; the listing says it was invented by a 6-year-old. About 20-minute games, 2 to 5 players. Sleeping Queens on Amazon.

Pros: Luck keeps it even between ages; quick
Cons: Price was $19.99 on Oct. 26, up from about $12 the day before, with only 6 left in stock

A Little More Strategy

Gamewright Sushi Go ($11.99, ages 8+)

Gamewright Sushi Go card game tin

A pick-and-pass game: everyone chooses a sushi card from their hand at the same time and passes the rest, so nobody waits for a turn. 2 to 5 players, about 15 minutes. Sushi Go on Amazon.

Pros: No waiting between turns; quick; more than 17,000 ratings
Cons: Many card types to learn for scoring

SCORE 4 ($19.99, ages 8+)

SCORE 4 card game box

From Spy Alley Partners: players build four suited piles while defensive cards allow comebacks. 2 to 6 players, with an age range of 8 to adult on the listing. SCORE 4 on Amazon.

Pros: Quick to learn; comeback cards keep it close
Cons: Only a handful of ratings so far; sold by a third-party seller; priciest here (tied)

Spy Trap ($19.99, ages 8+)

Spy Trap bluffing card game box

Also from Spy Alley Partners: a bluffing and bidding game with hidden traps, about 15 to 30 minutes for 2 to 6 players. Spy Trap on Amazon.

Pros: A different style (bluffing) from the rest of the list
Cons: Few ratings so far; bluffing can frustrate younger kids; tied priciest

Tips for Playing Across Generations

  • Pick games with big cards or color symbols (Giant UNO, Phase 10) if small print is hard to read.
  • Let the child shuffle or deal; it's part of the fun and it's practice.
  • Play the first round with cards face up so everyone learns the rules together.
  • Every game here has small parts or loose cards. Keep them away from babies and toddlers.
