Best Advent Calendars for Kids 2026 by Age: Play-Doh, HABA, Hot Wheels, Melissa & Doug, Playmobil

Five non-LEGO countdown calendars for ages 3 and up, with prices, age grades and safety notes

Advent calendars open on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and two of the picks below were already showing low stock on Amazon the morning of Oct. 25. Here are five non-LEGO picks sorted by age, from Play-Doh for preschoolers to Hot Wheels and Playmobil, with prices, age grades, safety notes and pros and cons. For the LEGO Star Wars, Marvel, Disney Princess and Friends calendars, see our LEGO Advent Calendars 2026 guide.

The free part that counts. A daily countdown is also a daily number-and-time routine. The CDC lists counting to 10 and using words about time such as "yesterday" and "tomorrow" among milestones most children reach by age 5, and suggests singing about the days of the week and letting your child know what day it is. Each morning, let your child find the number, then ask what you opened yesterday and what comes tomorrow. Skipping the store? A paper chain with one link to tear off per day does the same job.

Safety first. Almost every calendar hides small parts behind its doors, so each pick below carries a choking-hazard warning or an age grade of 3 or older; a toddler-looking box is not a toddler toy. The American Academy of Pediatrics' safe-toy guidance says to be careful about buying toys with small button or coin batteries or high-powered magnets. One pick below contains small magnets, noted in its entry.

Ages 3+: Play-Doh Advent Calendar (Hasbro)

Play-Doh Advent Calendar by Hasbro

Each of the 24 doors hides a 1-ounce Play-Doh can and surprise tools (one day brings a 2-ounce can of white Play-Doh Sparkle compound), and the box has tear-off snowman and gingerbread playmats to decorate with the first and second 12 days of surprises. The listing says 3 years and up and carries a small-parts choking warning; it notes that the Sparkle compound contains wheat.

Price: $33.22 on Amazon on Oct. 25, from a third-party seller.

Pros: The youngest-friendly pick here; everything left at the end is still a full Play-Doh set.
Cons: Not a 2026 edition; sold by a third party rather than Amazon; contains wheat, which matters for kids with wheat allergies.

Ages 3+: HABA My First Advent Calendar, Farmyard

HABA My First Advent Calendar farmyard wooden animals

Twenty-four wooden farmyard figures plus a 24-chapter storybook, "Theo the Raven Saves Christmas," with a short story for each day. HABA says it is made in Germany. The listing's bullets say ages 2 and up, but the page's warning says it's not for children under 3 because of small parts, so treat it as 3+.

Price: $39.99 on Amazon on Oct. 25.

Pros: Wooden pieces that become a lasting farm set; the storybook adds a daily reading habit.
Cons: The priciest pick here; the conflicting age labels mean parents of 2-year-olds should skip it; low stock on Oct. 25.

Ages 3+: Hot Wheels 2026 Advent Calendar (Mattel)

Hot Wheels 2026 Advent Calendar

A 2026 edition with 10 Hot Wheels cars in 1:64 scale, including an exclusive snow-globe car with a yeti driver, 14 winter-themed accessories such as a reindeer and sleigh, and 10 ornament clips for hanging the cars on the tree. Graded 3 and up, with a small-parts warning.

Price: $26.99 on Amazon on Oct. 25, sold by Amazon.

Pros: Under $30 and a current-year edition; the cars double as tree ornaments.
Cons: Only 10 of the 24 doors hold a car; it showed low stock on Oct. 25.

Ages 4+: Melissa & Doug Countdown to Christmas Wooden Advent Calendar

Melissa and Doug Countdown to Christmas Wooden Advent Calendar

A reusable magnetic wooden tree with 24 magnetic ornaments and a star; kids add one ornament a day, and a holiday poem on the back makes a read-aloud ritual. An attached wooden box stores the pieces. The listing's age field says 3+, but its safety information says recommended for ages 4 and up and that it contains small magnets, so we list it as 4+.

Price: $23.99 on Amazon on Oct. 25, from a third-party seller.

Pros: The cheapest pick and reusable year after year; no candy or clutter.
Cons: Contains small magnets, so keep the pieces away from babies and toddlers; no new toy each day, which some kids will miss.

Ages 4+: Playmobil Advent Calendar: Trip to the Christmas Market

Playmobil Advent Calendar Trip to the Christmas Market

Daily surprises add up to a Christmas market scene with four figures, an ice-skating rink, treats, animals and decorations. The listing says ages 4 and up and carries a small-parts choking warning.

Price: $35.98 on Amazon on Oct. 25, from a third-party seller.

Pros: Ends as a complete playset rather than loose trinkets; Playmobil figures fit sets kids may already own.
Cons: Not a 2026 edition; third-party seller; graded 4 and up, so not for toddler siblings.

Quick picks by budget: Under $30: Melissa & Doug ($23.99), Hot Wheels ($26.99). $30 to $40: Play-Doh ($33.22), Playmobil ($35.98), HABA ($39.99). LEGO's 2026 calendars are in our LEGO guide.
