The NPD Group: First Quarter 2021 U.S. Consumer Spending on Video Game Products Increased 30% (5/1/2021)
According to the Q1 2021 Games Market Dynamics: U.S.* report from The NPD Group, overall total consumer spending on video gaming in the U.S. totaled $14.92 billion in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021 (January - March), an increase of 30% compared to Q1 2020. Gains were seen across digital console and PC content, mobile and subscription spending, as well as across hardware and accessories categories. Content spending in Q1 reached $12.8 billion, an increase of 25%. Hardware and accessories also experienced double-digit percentage gains for the quarter, increasing 81% and 42%, respectively.

What began as a college senior project has led to an innovative startup company working with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, to light up lives through creativity and technology. Hagan Walker and Anna Barker were budding entrepreneurs in Mississippi State University's Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach when they hit on an innovative technology that generated light when mixed with liquid. They leveraged the discovery to create colorful cubes that, when dropped in liquid, light up in bright festive colors. The pair received customer feedback from an appreciative mom, who used the cubes to create a soothing and happy environment for bath time for her autistic child. Since then, the innovators have repurposed the cube technology into Glo Pals that inspire imaginative learning and sensory play.

Mattel will develop Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots®, the classic tabletop game featuring battling robots, into a live-action motion picture. Mattel Films is working with Universal Pictures and Vin Diesel’s production company, One Race Films, on the project. Diesel will also star in the film. Mattel Films will produce the project alongside Diesel and Samantha Vincent (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) from One Race Films. Ryan Engle (“Rampage,” “The Commuter”) penned the screenplay for the action adventure, which follows a father and son who form an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine. Toy Industry Sales Grew 16% in 2020: $25.1 Billion.U.S. retail sales of toys generated $25.1 billion in 2020, an increase of 16% or $3.5 billion. Unit sales for the year were flat while the average selling price increased by 16%*. Much of the growth in 2020 was directly correlated to the COVID-19 pandemic and the changing consumer behavior associated with widespread lockdowns and school closures, the disposable income diverted from other types of entertainment to toys, as well as the onset of federal stimulus checks. While toy sales through mid-March 2020 were flat vs. 2019, widespread lockdown measures led to an abrupt increase in sales.
