Dolls-- $2.8 Billions in Sales for 2003

The Dolls category was the industry to watch in 2003. NPD Group reported brisk sales of $2.8 billions and dolls show no signs of slowing down. Little girls want the option to choose and this season doesn’t disappoint with an array of lovable babies and new best friends.

As the reemerged Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony jockeyed for position against the growing success of Bratz and American Girl, the message is clear: Barbie is no longer the only doll in town.

While a number of toy makers continue to revive the past, such as Play Along Inc. bringing back the Cabbage Patch Kids, it remains to be seen if girls are willing to go back down memory lane. But one thing is for certain: Dolls are hotter than ever and more varied. Check out the following new trendsetters.

What make-believe mom can resist the allure of Corolle Dolls (Gift Guide)? Cuddly and precious Lila seeks attention as she awakes, happily babbling while anticipating her bottle. Bath time is special with Tidoo Suce-Pouce. This vanilla scented sweetheart is ready to dip in a calming bath for a little one ready for dreamland or to splish ‘n splash for the baby ready to play! Tidoo’s specially sealed body can handle water fun and dries quickly for bedtime snuggling. Bebe Do is an adorable, newborn treasure that is sensitive to the needs of little girls who wants a doll “that looks like me.” Soft and expressive, this bundle of joy will encourage hours of hugs and kisses.

Little girls will always have friends with the Forever Friendz collection from Dolls by Consolidated Enterprises (Gift Guide). Jada, Kylie, and Lianne Trendy are ready for a loving home with their own certificate of authenticity and beautiful window trunk box. Multi-jointed and ethnic sensitive, these one of a kind darlings will melt hearts, showing friendship and love comes in all colors.

Brass Key, Inc. (Gift Guide) has unlocked the door on elegance and glamour with their 2004 Disney Princess Holiday Collection. Cinderella, a timeless favorite, is a winter wonderland jewel in a breathtaking royal blue satin gown. Ready for the ball, this porcelain gem is showered in silvery snowflakes accented with luxurious, faux white fur. This beautiful 2004 special edition doll comes with a painted glass blown ornament, shaped as a delicate shoe. But only one? The entire collection is a must have for a true princess of any age!

Playmate Toys (Gift Guide) let little girls become the fashion designer with Disney Little Princess Magic Change Color Surprise Belle. With a magic applicator and a splash of cold water not only can little designers change the color of Belle’s outfits, but her nails, lip color and face paint can be changed too! And what ensemble is complete without accessories? Make bracelets appear and change necklace colors too!
